Advertising in ChatGPT

Your customer asks ChatGPT. Your ad can now be lifted to just below the answer.

ChatGPT Ads now run in 89 countries, and businesses in 31 European markets have been able to open their own Ads Manager account since 31 August 2026. Ads appear below the answer, only to users on the Free and Go plans, with a minimum daily budget of €15 and billing per impression or per click. Outside the US the rules differ in ways most guides skip: some categories are closed, ads are not personalised in Europe, and new accounts may start in their home country only. Here is what you may advertise, what it costs, how to set up and measure a campaign, and how it differs from being recommended by ChatGPT itself.

You don't buy keywords. You buy a place in the conversation.

The ad appears below ChatGPT's answer, labelled as an ad and set apart from the answer itself. Only adult users on the Free and Go plans see it. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts have no ads, and neither do temporary chats.

There are no keywords. The system chooses an ad from the meaning of the conversation, from the ad's landing page, title and copy, and from "context hints": phrases in which you describe what you offer, who it suits and when it helps. When several ads are eligible, a relevance-weighted second-price auction decides, so relevance counts, not only the bid.

OpenAI states that ads do not influence the answer, that advertisers never see conversations and that they receive only aggregated data such as impressions and clicks. In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, ads are not personalised for now: they are chosen from the conversation at hand, the language and the general location.

  • The ad unit

Advertiser name and logo, a title of up to 50 characters, copy of up to 100, one image or, in open beta since 26 October 2026, 4 to 6 square images, and one link.

  • Where it shows

Below the answer, on web, iOS and Android. A multi-image ad shown while ChatGPT generates an image is also being tested.

  • Where it never shows

Next to conversations about health, mental health, politics and other sensitive subjects, and to accounts of minors.

  • In which language

An ad's language may differ from the conversation's. If you opt in, the system adapts your title and copy to the conversation and translates them into the user's language.

Hotels, shops, experiences: yes. Clinics, insurers, wine: not yet.

In this first phase OpenAI accepts mainly consumer categories: lifestyle and household goods, local services, travel and experiences, digital products and education. Financial services, healthcare and legal services are approved case by case and, according to its policies, are generally prohibited outside the US.

For a business in Europe that means: a hotel, an online shop, a restaurant, an olive-oil producer, a language school or an app can advertise today. A clinic, an insurer, a law firm or a winery cannot, under the current rules. The rule covers the whole path: image, copy and landing page must all sit in an allowed category.

  • Allowed

Household and lifestyle goods, clothing, local services, travel, stays, experiences, digital products, education, software.

  • Not allowed outside the US

Banking, loans, insurance, investments, medical services and health claims, legal services.

  • Not allowed anywhere

Alcohol over 0.5%, tobacco, gambling, dating and adult content, politics, counterfeits, individual job and housing listings.

  • For everyone

Truthful claims, no exaggerated prices or results, and nothing that imitates the look of ChatGPT.

From €15 a day, per impression or per click.

Every campaign has one of three objectives. Views, billed per 1,000 impressions (CPM). Clicks, billed per valid click (CPC). And Conversions, where the system aims at a conversion you measure, but you still pay per click or per 1,000 impressions, not per conversion.

The maximum bid is set per ad group. For click campaigns, OpenAI suggests starting at $3 to $5 per click. No averages have been published for European markets yet; anyone quoting "the CPC in Europe" in October 2026 is speaking about their own accounts.

  • Minimum

    €15 a day for euro accounts ($25, £15, CHF 20, SEK 175).

  • Daily budget

A weekly average: one day may spend up to twice the amount, the week no more than seven times the daily budget.

  • Campaign-total budget

One amount for the whole campaign, the strictest control of spend.

  • Reporting delay

Impressions and clicks refresh about every 15 minutes, spend with a delay of 7 to 8 hours.

Write for needs, not for keywords.

A campaign has an objective, a budget, dates and countries, and optionally platforms. Inside it, ad groups are organised around one product or one need, each with its own context hints and its own ads.

Context hints are the most important part, and the newest. OpenAI asks for phrases that say what you offer, who it suits and when it is useful, one idea each. They are not keywords and not targeting rules: a phrase such as "show this ad only to people in Athens" does nothing.

  • A context hint, for example

"Sea-view suites on Naxos for couples looking for a quiet stay in September", instead of "hotel Naxos".

  • Many ads per group

OpenAI asks for many title and copy variations, each from a different angle, so the system finds more conversations where they fit.

  • Landing page

The most relevant page, not the home page. It must not block the OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot crawlers, or the ad may not be approved.

  • Measurement

The OpenAI Pixel on the site and the Conversions API from the server, with a shared event ID so nothing is counted twice. And UTM parameters on links, so the traffic shows in your analytics.

  • Product catalogue

Online shops can build campaigns from a product feed, with an ad template filled from each product's data.

  • Customer-list audiences

In the EEA and Switzerland OpenAI advises against them while personalisation is off. Inclusion needs at least 25,000 matched users.

The ad is bought. The place in the answer is earned.

An ad does not put you inside ChatGPT's answer; it puts you below it, labelled as an ad. For ChatGPT itself to cite or recommend you, its search crawler must be able to read your site and your content must answer clearly what customers ask.

Both stand on the same foundation: a site that can be read without obstacles, pages that say specifically what you do, correct product data. Ads give you a place from day one; organic visibility takes months to build, but you do not pay per click for it.

  • ChatGPT Ads

Self-service in 31 European markets and dozens more worldwide, in any language. In Greece it is the only ad channel inside an AI assistant that a business can open on its own today.

  • Google, AI Overviews and AI Mode

Ads inside Google's AI answers serve in English only and in a list of countries that does not include most of Europe.

Before you spend the first euro.

In the order that matters. The steps hold even if you decide not to advertise.

  1. Check that your category is allowed outside the US, in OpenAI's current ad policies.

  2. Open an account at ads.openai.com with the details of the legal entity that will be billed, and complete verification.

  3. Make sure your site does not block OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot, in robots.txt or in the firewall.

  4. Choose landing pages that each answer one need, not the home page.

  5. Write context hints on what you offer, to whom and when, and 4 to 6 ad variations per group.

  6. Set up measurement: the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API and UTM parameters on links.

  7. Start with a daily budget and the Clicks objective, and after two weeks compare cost per conversion with your other channels.

We set up advertising in ChatGPT. And measure it alongside everything else.

We run advertising on Google and Meta, and we now set up ChatGPT as one more channel, with the same measurement. We start from whether your category is allowed and finish with numbers you can compare with your other channels.

  • Eligibility check

Whether your category and pages pass OpenAI's policies, and whether its crawlers can read them.

  • Account and campaigns

Setup in Ads Manager, ad groups per need, context hints and ad variations in Greek and English.

  • End-to-end measurement

OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API, UTM and analytics, so ChatGPT shows next to Google and Meta.

  • Landing pages

Pages that answer one need, fast and easy to read for people and crawlers.

  • And the organic place

The same foundation that serves the ads also earns ChatGPT's recommendations, without paying per click.

The questions we hear most often.

Yes, in 89 countries. In 31 European markets, and in dozens of others, a business opens its own Ads Manager account at ads.openai.com. The legal entity that advertises and is billed must be based in a country on OpenAI's availability list.

The minimum daily budget is €15 for euro accounts ($25, £15). You pay per 1,000 impressions or per click, even in conversion campaigns. For click campaigns OpenAI suggests a starting bid of $3 to $5. No European averages have been published.

Adult users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts have no ads, nor do temporary chats, and ads never appear next to conversations about health or politics.

No. ChatGPT chooses the ad from the meaning of the conversation, the landing page and the context hints you write: phrases on what you offer, to whom and when. There is no list of search terms.

Generally not financial, medical or legal services. In every country, not alcohol, tobacco, gambling, dating, adult content or politics. The list changes as the programme grows.

Not for now. In the EEA and Switzerland ads are chosen from the current conversation, the language and the general location, and OpenAI advises against customer-list audiences there while personalisation is off.

Yes, but new accounts may at first advertise only in their home country. Other countries open after identity verification and a required amount of spend at home. You can also opt into automatic translation of your copy into the user's language.
